Westlands School is the Lead School for a partnership comprised of secondary schools and primary schools, all working in conjunction with the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex to recruit and train teachers on the School Direct Programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the option of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). 

School Direct is a school based route into teaching.  As a School Direct trainee training with us and our ITT providers, you will learn alongside highly skilled and passionate teachers.

Train to become a successful, confident and effective teacher, equipped to teach across a variety of age and ability ranges.  As a School Direct trainee you will gain teaching experience in one of our Trust or partner schools as an unqualified teacher.

We have a long history of teacher training within the Trust schools in Kent and have developed a rigorous and robust training programme.  This consists of a combination of practical and theoretical elements delivered by a dedicated team in the universities.

If you are completely new to the profession with no classroom experience, you will be supernumerary and will develop your practice at your own rate.  This is very much a bespoke programme, tailored to the individual.

Successful School Direct trainees will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the option to achieve a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

What is School Direct?

School Direct is a way of training teachers by putting schools at the heart of the process. It is an employment-based route into teaching for high quality graduates. Trainees will work as unqualified teachers in one of the schools within our teaching school alliance.  Swale Academies Trust works in partnership with the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex and both QTS and PGCE pathways are accredited by the relevant university.

From September trainees will be part of a whole school community where they will be immersed in everyday school life.   Each trainee will be supported by a subject mentor. This will be an experienced teacher, who will guide and support them in their development to become a successful teacher.  At each school there will be a Professional Mentor who will oversee the training of all trainees within their school and can provide additional support.   

Trainees will be based in the same school for the duration of their training, but there will be a second contrasting placement arranged so that all trainees are able to teach in a different school environment and broaden their experience further during their training year.

We recognise that trainees come with varying levels of previous school experience and our training is therefore tailored to the individual.  For example, those who have plenty of relevant classroom experience will have the opportunity to begin teaching whole classes early on in the programme.  Those with less relevant experience will receive more guidance in the beginning, to build a firm foundation on which to base their classroom practice.  We believe that it is important for trainees to have sufficient time to work with more experienced staff and mentors, in order to develop high level skills before being given full responsibility for classes. 

 

School Direct Routes

We offer two School Direct routes; salaried and non-funded.  They both offer QTS with an opportunity to opt for a PGCE if desired. 

For both salaried and non-funded positions, trainees must be high quality graduates with a 2:1 or above plus GCSE English, Mathematics and Science at grade C or better. However, applicants with a 2:2 will be considered if they can demonstrate good subject knowledge and a real aptitude for teaching.

 

Positions

School Direct Salaried Positions 

Applicants for a salaried position should have a minimum of three years full time work experience, which may be in any career, and does not have to be in an educational setting.

Trainees will be employed by one of the schools in the Alliance for the duration of their training, and will therefore receive a salary from the school.   The salary paid is a minimum of point 1 of the unqualified teacher scale.   There are no requirements to be supernumerary.  However, all of our inexperienced salaried trainees are always supernumerary at the beginning of the year, and will have no timetable commitments.

For salaried trainees, the university tuition fees to achieve QTS will be paid by the school.  Those who opt to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) will pay the extra costs.  Trainees on the salaried route cannot access bursaries, scholarships or student finance.

School Direct Non-funded Positions

Trainees on this route are responsible for university tuition fees for QTS.  For those who opt to undertake the PGCE, this will involve a further cost.

Awards

There are two possible awards from your School Direct training.  All School Direct trainees are automatically on the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) programme. However, there is the opportunity for those who wish, to opt into the Post Graduate Certificate in Education programme (PGCE).

 

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - All trainees

All successful School Direct trainee teachers will achieve the recommendation for QTS. 

The majority of your time on this programme is spent in school and the training is delivered at either the University of Brighton or the University of Sussex.

Trainees are assessed through a professional portfolio, which will evidence how the standards for the award of QTS are being met.   Evidence will include observations of teaching and professional activities and demonstrate a clear understanding of teaching and subject knowledge.  Classroom experience will increase in each successive term of the programme as confidence and ability develop.

Throughout the Programme, trainees are assessed by their mentors and university tutors who will grade them at key points to help them understand how well they are progressing towards meeting the standards for QTS.  At the end of the programme, the trainee will have a Final Assessment. 

Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) - Optional 

In addition to the above assessment process for the recommendation for QTS, Trainees who have opted for the PGCE award will be required to undertake further academic study and action research.  For more information please visit the relevant university website:

Application and Interview Process

We are keen to recruit high quality graduates.  Places with Swale Academies Trust are highly sought after, so early application is recommended. 

Applicants to the Swale Academies Trust School Direct Programme, will need to apply via UCAS.

Please note that all of the schools in The Westlands Teaching School Alliance are listed under the training provider code 14H on the UCAS website.

 

Interview and Assessment Day Format

If your application submitted through UCAS is successful, we will invite you for an interview and assessment day at your chosen school.

Programme for the day:

  • Introduction presentation
  • Tour of the School
  • Short Literacy and Numeracy Tests – assessing your basic skills
  • Delivery of teaching task (you will be provided with time to prepare this task prior to the lesson)
  • Group interview conducted by pupils
  • Subject based discussion to identify subject knowledge
  • Formal Interview

This is subject to change according to the specific school.

Should you be successful at interview, it is a requirement that Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy are completed within 6 weeks. If possible, skills tests should be completed prior to interview; if you have completed them please bring evidence with you that you have passed.

Entry Requirements

Degree

You should be a graduate, preferably with a 1st or a 2:1, although we are willing to consider applicants who have a 2:2 who can demonstrate good subject knowledge and a real aptitude for teaching. 

GCSE

You will need at least a grade C in GCSE English, Maths and Science.

Skills Tests

Should you be successful at interview, it is a requirement that Literacy and Numeracy Skills Tests are completed within 6 weeks.

Interview Process

Applications will be shortlisted on receipt from UCAS.  If selected for interview, applicants will be notified by email and invited to attend an interview and assessment day.
